Cranes have wide application in construction projects, industries and in shipping etc. These are used for lifting the loads (may be construction materials, loose materials, package, containers, finished and semifinished products in industries etc.) and placing them at desired place. For this purpose the cranes have three motions in general, namely hoisting, derricking and slewing. The cranes are generally electrically operated, diesel operated or may have diesel-electric drive.

The cranes can be classified in the following five classes as given below:
1. Derrick cranes
2. Mobile cranes
3. Traveller cranes
4. Overhead cranes, also known as Gantry cranes
5. Tower cranes
